What is BHO?
What is BHO? BHO (Butane Hash Oil) is an acronym derived from cannabis extracts done using butane as the main solvent. There are other types of solvents you could use as well (OHO, CHO, etc.) but we’ll focus on BHO for now. Basically, BHO can come in different forms such as crumble, shatter and budder and what form it will take is dependent on the process and techniques involved. For example, budder is created using many of the same methods as shatter except it is whipped during and after purging to change its consistency and texture. BHO, OHO, COO and so on are solvents used to extract cannabis so they fall into the ‘solvent’ family of wax. On the other hand, heat pressed rosin, dry sift and bubble hash rosin are created using straight up techniques to extract the cannabis without use of solventless. Therefore, these types of concentrates fall into the ‘solventless’ family. The biggest concerns of concentrates in the solvent family are the quality of the flower and how it is purged. Many growers tend to cheap out and use low quality (with seeds and stems, ick.) bud into their process and automatically the flavor and thc content are affected. Then to top it off, purging butane out of wax is an art of its own. Many inexperienced or rushing solvent makers mess up the purging process and traces of butane are found inside of the wax. As one might imagine, this isn’t very healthy. Too much butane (or really any at all) is obviously bad and you might end up with bronchitis or popcorn lung from smoking too much. Whenever smoking wax, try to identify what types of concentrate you are smoking first and then ask yourself is the cheaper option always better? Solvent wax tends to go for less, but then again quality is never cheap. One thing for sure though; here at The Street Corner we don’t support BHO.
