Yellowcab
During the early 90’s
there was an influx of Americans moving to Amsterdam to delve into the local cannabis culture and intersperse with the breeders of The Netherlands in hopes of creating new and exciting strains of cannabis. One such group of young entrepreneurs, and band mates, saw an opportunity to open a coffeeshop in Amsterdam and pursue their dreams. In 1994 they finally made their dreams a reality and opened their new coffee shop in central Amsterdam called “Grey Area”. Being one of the only American coffee shops selling cannabis in Holland, if not the first, word of the place quickly spread and soon locals flocked to shop to see what these Americans had to offer. To their surprise, the flower was surprisingly good, on par if not better than some of the local shops and the Grey Area was swiftly named some of the best quality in Holland. One such strain to reinforce this tale is the legendary ‘Yellow Cab’. Contrary to what the name implies, this strain was not imported from America, but was actually a seed found in The Netherlands with unknown origins. The strain was named Yellow Cab as a homage to the New York City origins of the grower and he always kept the origins of the strain shrouded in mystery. The man went by the alias ‘The Darth’ and he began to clone the original mother. The strain was never crossed to produce a seed stock. That being said, this mystery weed was so unique and potent that it won third place in the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1997 for the best flower in Amsterdam coffee shops. Yellow Cab has fuzzy, light green leaves that have an almost yellowish hue with little dark green splotches dispersed throughout. It has a dank, earthy smell to it but with hints of sweetness, one might almost say fruity. The main quality that really made the Yellow Cab stand out was its euphoric head high. It’s been described as a reverse migraine, almost as if there’s pressure being relieved behind the eyes. Another interesting thing is that there isn’t really a ceiling for the high; the more you smoke the higher you get until eventually you’re in a lethargic, sedated state in which you simply can’t find the energy to take another puff.
